Burundi Steps Into the Global Spotlight with the Musongati Nickel Project

Burundi is beginning to draw international attention as a promising destination for critical minerals, following the signing of a major agreement to explore the country’s largest nickel deposit.

On March 10, 2026, the Government of Burundi and Lifezone Metals signed an exclusivity agreement that could pave the way for the development of the Musongati Nickel Project. The agreement was signed during a ceremony at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., highlighting the growing global interest in Burundi’s natural resources.

A Hidden Giant Beneath Burundi’s Soil

For decades, geologists have known that Musongati holds enormous potential. Located in southeastern Burundi, the deposit lies within the Kabanga-Musongati Alignment of the East African Nickel Belt, a geological corridor known for its rich mineral formations.

Studies conducted over the past 50 years suggest that Musongati contains more than 140 million tons of nickel-bearing ore. That alone makes it one of the largest nickel deposits in the region. But nickel may not be the only treasure beneath the ground. Researchers believe the site could also contain copper, cobalt, gold, platinum-group metals, and scandium as by-products.

If developed, the project could become a major source of materials used in electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy technologies, and other advanced industries.

A Moment of Opportunity for Burundi

For Burundi, the project represents more than just a mining venture, it could become a catalyst for economic growth and international investment.

The agreement gives Lifezone Metals 14 months to study the Musongati deposit and evaluate how it could be responsibly developed. The company will begin with a 30-day scoping phase, analyzing existing geological data and preparing a plan for deeper exploration and potential feasibility studies.

Burundi’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Energy, Industry, Trade and Tourism, Dr. Hassan Kibeya, welcomed the partnership and emphasized its importance for the country.

“We welcome Lifezone as a partner in Burundi,” Kibeya said. “This agreement is built on transparency and mutual respect. Together we want to unlock the full potential of the Musongati Project for the benefit of the people of Burundi.”

Growing International Attention

The signing ceremony attracted officials from the United States and representatives from international companies, signaling a broader shift toward Africa as a vital source of critical minerals.

Nickel has become one of the world’s most sought-after metals because of its role in producing batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. As countries seek to secure reliable supplies, new regions like East Africa are becoming increasingly important.

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Sarah Troutman noted that partnerships with African nations are essential for building stronger and more transparent supply chains for these minerals.

“Securing resilient and transparent critical mineral supply chains is a national security priority for the United States,” she said. “Countries like Burundi play an important role in this effort.”

Technology Meets Exploration

The event also highlighted how modern technology is transforming mineral exploration. Representatives from KoBold Metals, a California-based company that uses artificial intelligence to identify mineral deposits, signed a memorandum of understanding with Burundi to help digitize the country’s geological data.

By turning decades of geological records into digital datasets, the initiative could help scientists and investors better understand Burundi’s underground resources and potentially uncover new ones.

Burundi’s Emerging Role in Critical Minerals

The Musongati agreement comes at a time when global cooperation on critical minerals is expanding. Earlier this year, the United States launched the Forum on Resource Geostrategic Engagement (FORGE), an international initiative aimed at strengthening partnerships around the development of essential minerals.

With its location in the mineral-rich East African Nickel Belt and increasing international partnerships, Burundi is gradually positioning itself as an emerging player in the global critical minerals landscape.

A Country on the Rise

For a country often overlooked in global mining discussions, Musongati represents a powerful opportunity. If the project moves forward, it could create jobs, attract investment, and place Burundi more firmly on the global map of strategic mineral producers.

For now, the agreement marks the beginning of a new chapter;one where Burundi’s natural resources may help shape not only its own economic future, but also the future of global clean energy supply chains.
