Burundi Aligns with African Union’s Position on the Situation in Venezuela

The Government of the Republic of Burundi has officially underscored its alignment with the position expressed by the African Union (AU) regarding the rapidly evolving situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. This move reflects Bujumbura’s commitment to continental solidarity, respect for international law, and support for peaceful, diplomatic solutions to complex geopolitical crises.

African Union’s communiqué

In a recent communiqué, the African Union voiced deep concern over the developments in Venezuela — particularly reports of the apprehension of President Nicolás Maduro and attacks on governmental institutions — and reiterated its steadfast commitment to the fundamental principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, including state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination.

Burundi’s endorsement of this stance aligns with the AU’s call for restraint, diplomatic engagement, and respect for constitutional processes. By lending its voice to the African position, Burundi highlights the importance of addressing the Venezuelan situation through inclusive dialogue among Venezuelans themselves, supported by the broader international community, rather than through unilateral or military measures.

The alignment also mirrors a broader trend within African diplomatic circles. Earlier this week, the group of African member states on the United Nations Security Council — known as the “A3” (Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and Liberia) — similarly reaffirmed their support for the AU’s communiqué, emphasizing respect for sovereignty and peaceful resolution, and calling for comprehensive national-level solutions.

Burundi’s commitment

For Burundi, this alignment underscores its continued commitment to multilateralism and to the principles that guide both the African Union and the United Nations. It reinforces the nation’s role as a constructive partner in addressing international crises through dialogue, respect for legal norms, and cooperation among nations.

As events unfold in Venezuela, Burundi — in concert with the African Union — remains resolute in its belief that durable peace and stability can only be achieved through negotiation, respect for the rule of law, and solutions that derive from within the affected nation itself.
